Ch 13 State Structure

• The Byzantine empire survived through the fall of the western half of Rome.
• Emperor had complete rule over political and religious matters during the 6th century, theocracy
• Bureaucrazy and laws made created a centralized state
• Corpus Iuris civils is the codification of Roman laws, made by Justinian
• Brought order to the state
• During the 8th century the Theme system was established:
• Generals were given a peice of land and governed that specific area
• Led military and central administration
• Appointed by the imperial government
• kept a close watch on generals to make sure there were no plans of decentralization
• Theme system helpd resist invasions and meant stronger political and social order
